So you decided to try a Spanish wine, the first wine that you will probably try is a Tempranillo. The grape that this wine is made of is planted in a lot of places in Spain. It has a couple of names, Tinto Fino, Tinto de Toro, Cencibel, Ull de Llebre, and Tinto del Pais.
The wines from this region have great flavors of earth and fruit. In this region, Tempranillo grapes are mixed with others like Graciano, Mazuelo, or Maturana Tinta. Sometimes, people who make wines will add non-standard grapes like the Cabernet Sauvignon.
People will often call Rioja wines modern or maybe even traditional. These wines are aged in barrels made from American Oak. These barrels add a little bit of coconut and dill flavor to the wine. They can also be aged in French oak barrels. In this case, the flavors added to the wine are baking spice and vanilla. Most winemakers will use only one of these methods, but some are known to use methods that encompass both of these. In these cases, the wine is usually aged in a barrel that is made from both types of oak.
Ribera del Duero
In this region, wines are mostly completely Tempranillo, and are very rarely mixed with other varieties. The region of Ribera del Duero is the second most famous of the top quality wines of Tempranillo wine. In Rioja, American oak is used, but in this region, the taste you will feel will be mostly cinnamon, scalp, and vanilla. This region is much richer than Rioja. How old wine is, will tell you labels – Gran Reserva, Reserva, and Crianza.
Wines from this region will be great for you if you love California sunny wines, but you are also looking for a bit of earthy note. Most vineyards in this place were built as terraces due to a very steep landscape. In Priorat is also a unique layer of soil (lichorella). Such terrain conditions lead to the fact that grapevines must dig deep into the ground to find enough nutrients and water. These red wines are mainly produced from the varieties Carinena and Garnacha, mainly mixed with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and others. If these wines are above the price you were planning to pay, look for it from the region next to – Montasant.
